The Malaysian Ministry of Transportation demands you Slow Down and eat Durian
We highly recommend you set aside two weeks of vacation and arrive a week before the event to allow for adequate rest. For example, you may choose to depart Saturday May 9 and return Saturday May 23.
The journey to Malaysia takes you to the opposite side of earth in two days.
You will want a few days to adjust after your long journey and the +12 hours time zone shift. Yes! day will be night and night will be day!
Your destination is Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL).
Check Google Flights for your options: google.com/travel/flights
Flights do exist to Melaka (MKZ) but they require a connection through Singapore on Scoot Airlines. Connecting with a different airline can get tricky with bags and immigration.
There are no direct flights to Malaysia from North America
You will need to fly out of a major city such as Miami, New York, LA or San Francisco to limit your connecting flights.
Limit your travel to one layover if possible! Multiple connections can be an issue if any of your flights are delayed.
Book directly through the airline. If something goes wrong they will rebook you right away.
Examples of routes we have flown in the past, including layover time.
($$$) ~20 hours: Singapore Airlines: Los Angeles-Singapore-Kuala Lumpur.
The absolute shortest route is on Singapore Airlines from LAX at around 20 hours door to door.
($$$) ~30 hours: Qatar Airways: Miami-Doha-Kuala Lumpur.
We have taken Qatar Airways with success from Miami but our connecting flight ended up delayed.
Make sure you have sufficient layover times of 3-4 hours when connecting through Doha.
($$) ~35 hours: Turkish Airlines: Chicago-Istanbul-Kuala Lumpur.
Our most recent trip connected through Istanbul with long layovers. This was a cost effective route but required long layovers.
But wait... there's more!
Our event on Saturday is hosted in Melaka.
Melaka is ~1.5 to 2 hour drive south of Kuala Lumpur; about the same as driving from Miami to Jupiter back in Florida.
Similar to Jamaica, Malaysia was a British colony until 1957 and they drive on the left side of the road. If you're renting a car keep the left-handed situation in mind.
There's no Uber or Lyft but there is a ride share service called Grab. You can use this to hail a ride wherever you need through their app.
We hope you arrive in Malaysia a few days early to settle in. Kuala Lumpur is the capital of Malaysia and you will find it to be a world class city. In some regards it overshadows American cities in terms of facilities, dining and traffic jams.
If you initially arrive in Kuala Lumpur, plan on checking out by Friday and making your way down to Melaka.

We expect most of you will have your own travel itineraries after joining us for our dinner event. Please make the most of your stay while you're in Malaysia and Southeast Asia. Thailand and Vietnam are also close by should you choose to continue to explore other destinations.
If you are returning:
via Singapore: you can take a flight from Melaka (MKZ) to Singapore. This can be a bit more complex as you may need to book through multiple airlines.
